Q. No matter how hard I try, I can’t get my 6-year-old daughter to eat her vegetables -- especially the green ones. Do you have any tips?
A. This is very common. Kids’ taste buds are far more sensitive than adults’, and many have a very strong negative reaction to the bitter flavors of some green vegetables, such as spinach, Brussels sprouts and asparagus. Kids at this age are also sensitive to the texture of foods. They may prefer their vegetables raw or just partially cooked. Try squeezing a little fresh lemon juice over the cooked vegetables.
My kids love frozen green peas. Yes, frozen. They eat them like they are dessert! They also like edamame -- cold or warm. My daughter particularly likes the frozen edamame that comes in single-serve packages (in the freezer section of the store). Both of these green vegetables are pretty mild in flavor, so you may want to give them a try if you haven’t already.
