Expert Q&A
I want to raise happy children, but I’m worried that my husband's battle with depression could affect their feelings.
The more you’re able to maintain a positive attitude, the better your children will weather this storm. Seek support for yourself and your family from professionals, family and friends. Keep family routines and activities in place with as much participation from your husband and your support system as possible.
Your children need to know that depression is a temporary illness that can be treated successfully. It’s no one's fault -- especially not theirs, and not your husband’s either.
Explain to your kids that they can help by being generous with their kindness and patience. Answer their questions in a simple, straightforward manner, and keep in mind that they’re probably looking for reassurance more than a lot of information. Keep an optimistic spirit, and it will carry you all through this!
